It’s deeply ingrained in the human psyche to envy and admire that which is not the immediate self, that is, the other, for having attributes which are foreign to the immediate self, hence the case of envy and admiration in BOTH men and women. However, what to envy and who to envy are also shaped and triggered by social factors (i.e. you would either envy or admire a skinny woman because society /says/ she’s more beautiful than you are), and unfortunately most of these factors have the underlying thought of self-deprecation and rigid standards of beauty.
When women say “other women are the enemy”, I hope they mean that some women have become so brainwashed by patriarchal dictates that they impose these same ideas in their fellow women, creating a domino effect of women hating each other and themselves, and are not, in fact, becoming a picture of this said patriarchal imposition.
PS: Feminism is not a /fad/, in that it changes with the times to whatever people like or see fit. It’s a reaction to the oppression which women have experienced throughout the centuries, and which they continue to experience today. It will not - should not - become outdated like the next pop song or hairstyle, but should continue as long as there is inequality that must be fought against.
PPS: Some sources say this was a misquotation by the interviewer, but I guess what I’m reacting against is the thought created by this misquote, quote, whatever this thing is. Because whoever said this, or if it has been said at all by a physical being, a thing has been let out into the world: an idea; and this idea - at least for me, as a woman, as a person - should be stopped.
feminism isn’t perfect but it’s important
without feminist movements, women wouldn’t have half the rights that they have now and we’re still fighting for our rights
the day women are as equal and respected as white men is the day that feminism’s job will be completed and i don’t think that will happen for a very long time so get used to it
